Gov. Bob Riley launched The Alabama ACCESS Distance Learning Initiative on November 1, 2004 with a funding of $10.3. The central vision of Gov. Bob Riley's Task Force was to provide equal access to high quality instruction to improve student achievement through student improvement through distance learning opportunities. Over the next five years it will focus on a.Provide access to advanced diploma courses targeting foreign languages.
b.Provide access to additional course offerings.
c.Provide access to Advanced Placement or dual credit courses.
d.Provide access to remediation and supplemental resources.
e.Leverage existing resources and distance learning offerings.
f.Provide teachers with additional multimedia and technology tools to enhance instruction.
g.Utilize outside evaluation to periodically assess weaknesses and strengths of the program in order to make appropriate
Adjustments to the implementation of Year Two through Year Five objectives.
For example, if a student anywhere in the state wants to take Chinese and a Chinese teacher exists, technology will allow the student to take the course regardless of location. Under this plan Alabama public high school students will have access to the advanced diploma, remediation courses, and a wide array of elective options not available in any one school. This plan will bring 21st Century Classrooms into high schools in Alabama. The plan will also support teachers and principals by bringing professional development and additional technology resources directly to schools and into the classroom.
